Senior RF/RAN Design Engineer

Roles and Responsibilities

You will play a major role in the growth of our company, driving the design of new small-cell Radio Access Networks (“RAN”s) and microwave backhaul links to support the rapid expansion of our wireless facilities. Your passion for excellence will help bring advanced communications capabilities at affordable prices to hundreds of unserved communities throughout widespread areas of California.  A not-insignificant subset of the work will additionally be focused on upgrades to existing facilities.

Principal functions will include:

  • Radio Frequency (“RF”) design and planning, including site selection for optimal area coverage
  • Microwave link path analysis, including the design of redundant network rings
  • Selection of appropriate RAN and microwave equipment to meet capacity and performance requirements
  • Specifying antenna placement parameters and producing engineering drawings for construction teams
  • Collaborating with other engineering & construction teams to ensure designs are properly implemented
  • Testing, collecting and analyzing data to confirm proper functioning of deployed designs
  • Redesigning mature RAN areas to mitigate capacity constraints and improve various other KPIs
  • Leading improvements in process flow to achieve higher operational efficiency
  • Providing subject matter expertise to train and mentor new and current engineers
  • Documenting all work and presenting reports to upper management on a regular basis

Skills and Experience

At least 6 years of pertinent work experience in the cellular or telecommunications industry, including:

  • Wireless infrastructure & RAN equipment such as Nokia, SIAE, Ericsson, ZTE, Cambium, or Ubiquiti
  • RF propagation modelling tools such as Atoll, Overture, SPLAT!, RadioMobile, BroadbandPlanner, etc.
  • Link planning software such as Pathloss, ComStudy, RadioMobile, Mentum Ellipse 7, etc.

Applicable technical skills, including:

  • Expertise in RF theory and practice, including propagation models, predictive analysis, various tools & processes, and engineering principles
  • Good comprehension of LTE network KPIs and key parameters
  • Familiarity with mapping software, such as Google Earth, Mapinfo, or QGIS
  • Microsoft Office suite, with particular advanced strengths in Excel
  • Knowledge of SQL and VB scripting helpful, but not mandatory

General skills including:

  • Strong critical thinking and analytical skills; results-oriented with a focus on quality
  • Impressive ability to juggle multiple competing priorities and keep the ball rolling on each
  • Strong leadership skills with the ability to mentor and influence others, work well under pressure, and cooperate with other company departments
  • Strong oral, written, and presentation communication skills
  • Proactive mindset, with a focus on continuous improvement


Required:  At least a Bachelor’s degree in Electrical/Electronics Engineering, Telecommunications, Computer Science, or related field

Work Conditions

The work location will be in our headquarters building in Shingle Springs, California, or in one of our satellite offices in Salida or Sonora; occasional work-from-home is acceptable in certain circumstances

Occasional extensive travel with company vehicle within the confines of our service area in Central/Northern California (a valid driver’s license with a clean driving record is required)
