Cancer Studies for Determined People

Hypnosis, Meditation, and Survival

Bernauer Newton, a hypnotherapist, used hypnotherapy on 283 cancer patients over an eight-year period. If they had received at least 10 sessions, 57% were alive after eight years. Of those who had less then ten sessions, only 18% were alive at the end of the period. Newton, B.W. "The Use of Hypnosis in the Treatment of Cancer Patients," American Journal of Clinical Hypnosis 25(2-3):104-13(1982-83). Note from Martha Hoff: I found this reference but have not yet seen a copy of this particular article. As cancer patients in general do better then the poorer percentage, I am assuming that his patient population included those with poorer prognosis.

Ainslie Meares, M.D., promotes a form of intensive meditation as a possible cure for cancer. His aim is to alleviate stress, which in turn lowers cortisone levels. Cortisone can decrease immune system function. He also contends that meditation can improve the flow of blood to tumors, which would provide more oxygen and white blood cells from the immune system. Meares reports that patients whose cancer has regressed have a significant decrease in anxiety. He gives several case studies of cancer patients who successfully used meditation. Meares, A. "Stress, Meditation and the Regression of Cancer, " Practitioner 226(1371):1607-9 (1982) and "A Form of Intensive Meditation Associated with the Regression of Cancer," American Journal of Clinical Hypnosis 25(2-3:114-21 (1982-83).
