Inside Bay Area.com visits the Eagles Hall

The Oakland Tribune's Inside Bay Area.com, April 3, 2008 edition has an article, slide show and video on our Friday night dances at the Eagles hall.

From the San Francisco Chronicle, July 4, 2004:

The good times are rolling at Bay Area zydeco dances

By: Janine DeFao, Chronicle Staff Writer

In a crowded dance hall, couples are two-stepping their cowboy boots over a well-worn wood floor as a singer belts out tunes in French over strains of upbeat accordion and down-home washboard.

It's a vibe straight out of the bayou, right here in the Bay Area.

For nearly a decade, Alameda -- the sleepy island city with a reputation more white bread than gumbo -- has been the epicenter of a zydeco scene that dancers and musicians say is the biggest this side of Cajun country.

"We have the largest weekly dance scene in the country outside Louisiana and Texas," said "Louisiana Sue" Ramon, a Pelican State native now living in Sacramento who puts on dances at Alameda's Eagles Hall that draw up to 250 people every Friday night. "In Louisiana, we call it happy music. Most of us say it's an addiction." Read more
